Agency vs. freelance?

Hiring an agency is a competitive disadvantage for most D2C brands. Here's why:

TLDR: By hiring a good freelancer, you will  spend less of your marketing budget on management fees and more on adverts. You will secure the services of a more experienced ad manager, who has more time to deliver success relative to management fees. All of which delivers a higher ROI and with no long term commitments.

The long version: Hire me and you will be paying for me (and only me!) to run your ads. In the typical agency model, their overheads and profit margins dictate that less experienced/time poor ad managers  do the vast majority of the work and you will pay a lot more for their limited time.

Agency owners; "We are somehow different...!" ❌ This always features in the sales pitch, yet I've witnessed the opposite outcome time and time again.

I took the decision to work as a freelance so that I can personally manage every ad campaign for my clients, while charging a fair day rate for doing so. For the client, that's a win-win.

But can a freelancer scale my brand? I’ve spent 5 years in agencies and in-house teams, followed by over a decade working hands-on as a freelance specialist. That’s 15+ years driving growth across a wide spectrum of D2C brands.

From early-stage start-ups to billion-pound businesses, I’ve delivered standout results and I know exactly what works, what doesn’t, and why.

Finally, you can stay lean.Unlike most agencies, I won’t push you into a long-term contract. You stay flexible, unless you choose to lock in a larger share of my time well into the future (as some brands already do).

Get in touch today and we can chat about your advertising needs.

Some of my clients are saying...

"Since Tom took over the accounts 5 years ago, online ad revenue has grown over 100% each year, while also exceeding our ROAS targets.

..His aggressive strategy has enabled us to aggressively add new customers at a fast pace, while also growing online brand recognition, in a highly competitive niche.

Tom's work is a major factor behind our growth, propelling us to twice feature in the The Sunday Times Fast Track 100."
Moshe Cohen - MD, Online Home Shop
"Tom was recommended to us as an ad consultant who gets results in a highly competitive DTC space, like women's fashion.

His knowledge and experience led to instant results. With a significantly improvement in ROAS we were able to aggressively scale our new customer acquisition efforts via PPC and paid social."
Sophia Ciampa - MD Apricot Clothing
"Tom has expertly managed our PPC & paid social advertising accounts for 5 years. During this time they have significantly outperformed other marketing channels and have been crucial to our record business growth.

An agency managed the accounts prior to his involvement and they were in a mature state, targeting users globally. Despite this, Tom has more than quadrupled ad revenues, while also improving our ROAS.

If you are questioning; is a freelancer capable of managing a 7+ figure budget? The answer in Tom's case is a resounding yes."
David Allen - Director, Shade Station
"We started working with Tom on one of our key social ad accounts. The campaigns were being managed by an advertising agency, but had faltered with spiralling costs.

Tom immediately identified areas of opportunity, he implemented a new account structure and a split testing programme. The results speak for themselves; CAC reduced by over 60% year-on-year!

On a personal level, Tom is really easy to get along with and truly feels like an extension of our marketing team”.
